Я протестировал её и готов поделиться своими впечатлениями.

Возможности Astropad

Как и версия для macOS, Astropad эмулирует работу полноценного графического планшета. Не нужно скачивать плагины и драйверы — достаточно установить и запустить приложение на iPad и компьютере. Подключиться к планшету можно двумя способами — по USB и по Wi-Fi. В случае последнего, крайне желательно иметь роутер с поддержкой частот 5 ГГц и стандарта 802.11ac, чтобы избежать задержек и улучшить качество передаваемой картинки.

После установки приложение позволяет выбрать зону для рисования. Таким образом, можно транслировать на iPad не весь экран вашего ПК, а лишь часть, например холст в Adobe Photoshop. Также это можно делать и не прикасаясь к компьютеру, удерживая красную кнопку и нажав на кнопки смены масштаба.

Чтобы сделать использование гораздо удобнее, разработчики добавили жестовое управление. Если удерживать палец на экране и начать рисовать — включится ластик. Тапнув двумя пальцами можно отменить действие, а тремя — повторить. Щипком двумя пальцами можно двигать и менять масштаб холста.

Отличным дополнением стало боковое меню с быстрыми действиями. В него можно вынести шорткаты вроде добавления слоев, изменения размера кистей или отмены/повтора. Кроме этого, внизу расположена кнопка вызова экранной клавиатуры и клавиш-модификаторов.

Настроек у приложения немного. Так как Astropad для Windows лишь на ранней стадии разработки, доступен далеко не весь функционал из приложения на macOS. Например, настройка силы нажатия Pencil тут неполноценна и предлагает на выбор лишь два профиля: с высокой чувствительностью и низкой. Не хватает возможности настройки шорткатов, которая есть на macOS, а про настройки под каждое приложение и говорить не приходится.

Как работает Astropad на Windows

И вот мы перешли к самому главному — работоспособности приложения. Неудивительно, что бета-версия распространяется бесплатно — качество реализации пока оставляет желать лучшего. Изображение очень смазанное, спасает лишь трансляция всего экрана, а не определённой зоны. Но рисовать в таком режиме практически невозможно — уж слишком всё мелко.

К качеству самого соединения претензий нет. Задержка минимальна даже при беспроводном соединении. Как показывает сама утилита, она составляет всего 7 мс, в чём я лично не сомневаюсь. Также нет никаких разрывов или подлагиваний — всё плавно и быстро.

В целом, проблемы с изображением обязательно должны поправить. Однако, у этой утилиты есть один важный и критический для многих недостаток, который устранить уже вряд-ли выйдет, — приложение поддерживает только Windows 10.

Как и ожидалось, утилита в текущем виде очень сырая и не готова к использованию на постоянной основе. Но не стоит забывать, что это бета-версия и к релизу все недостатки уже будут исправлены. К слову, попробовать Astropad для Windows можно сейчас, причём совершенно бесплатно, загрузив с официального сайта.

Current Users

Will my current Luna dongle work?

Our goal is to make our USB-C Luna dongles work for Windows. We’re also working on a new HDMI Luna specifically for Windows users since this is a common port found in PCs.

If I’m currently a customer with the apps do I have to buy them again in order for them to work with Windows?

No. We will launch new Windows-specific apps that will be available for download for those who have already paid for our products.

Product Features

Will the Windows versions of your apps be as fast as the Mac versions?

Yes, we’re working to ensure that our products have the same performance across all platforms.

Once your products are available for Windows, will I be able to use them with both a Windows computer and tablet or will they only work with a Windows computer and iPad?

Our products will be made to work between a Windows computer and an iPad. This includes Apple Pencil support!

How many screens can I use with Luna for Windows?

A: Luna extends your primary display to one additional secondary screen. So, you can have one additional screen per Windows setup.

Can I use Luna + Astropad together with the Windows version?

Will Luna have Headless Mode as it does on Mac?

Yes, our goal is to have Headless Mode available with Luna for Windows.

Should I expect to see the same features on the Windows versions of your products?

Why aren’t Windows versions of your products available now?

Great question! We’ve always been a Mac-focused company and we’ve been steadily working towards Windows for several months now. We’re making significant progress, but more has to be done to get this right. Most recently, we hired two new Windows Engineers to speed up the process. Will Luna, Studio, and Standard work with any PC applications?

Yes. Just like the Mac versions, we’re working to ensure that our products work with any PC app.

Are you developing for Android and/or Linux?

We’re re-writing our code in Rust – which means we’re investing in a code foundation that will help us reach all new platforms. That includes Android, Linux, and beyond! Once we reach Windows, we’ll be looking into additional platforms to bring our products to.

The Windows Frontier: What’s Coming in 2020

Sailing Toward Astropad and Luna for Windows

2019 was a crazy roller coaster of a year! So much has happened since we first launched Luna Display in 2018. Our team has nearly doubled in size, we were “sherlocked” by Apple, and we introduced Mac-to-Mac Mode in Luna Display 4.0. With the start of the new year, we’re excited to share an update on our progress toward Astropad and Luna Display for Windows. Here’s an inside look at our journey so far, and a sneak preview of where we’re headed.

Taking a Deep Dive with Rust

To bring Astropad and Luna Display to Windows, our Engineering team is working hard to rewrite our code in the Rust programming language (whose internet mascot is an adorable crab!). One reason for translating our core technology to Rust is its ability to support multiple operating systems, including Windows. Beyond that, Rust also brings improved safety, speed, and performance to our foundational code. While the journey to go cross-platform has not always been a straightforward path, we’re excited to celebrate some of the major milestones that we’ve already met along the way:

Building an HDMI Prototype

In addition to guaranteeing that existing Luna USB-C units will work on Windows, part of the cross-platform journey means developing a Luna HDMI unit!

To do this, our Hardware and Firmware Engineers researched the hardware and software specifications required to use an HDMI monitor as a second screen for a Windows PC. The engineers then built a protocol analyzer board to intercept and log passing data traffic in order to further study the connection between monitor and PC. On the board, they also included a microcontroller on which we can start developing our own Luna code. This microcontroller allows us to move towards a working physical prototype without needing to have all of the parts finished first.

Now that we have nearly figured out how to build a sufficient HDMI unit using the protocol analyzer board, we’re working to whittle all of it down into a smaller functional form! Our hardware engineer created a virtual prototype of the smaller Luna circuit board in a software tool called Altium. We then used that design to build the physical circuit boards to continue coding on and testing:

All Hands on Deck: Upcoming Betas

Our mission is to give our users the best possible user experience and to do that we need all the feedback we can get. In the first half of 2020, we’ll begin beta testing on Astropad Studio with a private beta group before moving into a full public beta. We also plan to do a test manufacturing run of 100 Luna Display HDMI units.

Getting Started with Astropad Standard

before you start

Astropad Standard works with your favorite creative tools like Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Illustrator, and more. It only takes a few moments to set up – so you’ll be ready to take on your next creative project in no time! Here’s what you’ll need before you download the Astropad Standard Mac and iPad apps.

connecting your devices

Connecting via WiFi

Connect to the same WiFi network on both your Mac and iPad. When both the Mac and iPad apps are open, Standard will automatically wirelessly connect.

Connecting via USB Cable

Use your USB cable to connect your iPad to your Mac. When both the Mac and iPad apps are open, Standard will automatically connect via the cable.

Astropad Ring Button

Once connected, you will see the Astropad ring button on your screen. It can be moved anywhere on the screen by holding it down and dragging it to your desired location.

Adjusting Your Canvas with Move & Zoom Mode

On your iPad, you can adjust the mirrored-screen view of your Mac to accommodate your desired canvas size. Move & Zoom Mode allows you to pan and zoom to adjust the size of the mirrored desktop on your iPad screen with two-finger gestures. It’s accessible by pressing the Astropad ring button (as seen in the example image below) or by selecting it through the Workspace Sidebar.

Reveal or hide Standard’s Workspace Sidebar by tapping the Astropad ring button.

Toggling Between Additional Screens or Luna Display

If you have an additional monitor attached to your Mac, or are using Luna Display, use Screen Switching in Move & Zoom to toggle between the Mac, additional monitor, and/or Luna.

Using Luna Display together with Astropad allows the iPad to work as both a drawing tablet and an extended screen.

Touch Pan & Zoom

Using two fingers, you can pan and zoom around your canvas, directly within your creative program, just as you would using a Mac trackpad. (This is different from Move & Zoom Mode, which is for positioning the entire desktop screen view and program window on the iPad).

Sidebar Menu

There are many useful features to access in the Shortcuts Sidebar. Along with editing shortcuts, you can check connection quality, and adjust settings.

Shortcuts Sidebar lets you utilize shortcut commands by tapping them from your iPad screen. At anytime, you can edit or rearrange your saved shortcuts. In this Shortcuts Sidebar, you can also access many functions and settings, including:

Tap the symbol in the Shortcuts Sidebar to open more of Astropad Standard’s iPad Settings. Functions accessible in this menu include:

Editing Shortcut Commands

By default, Astropad Standard’s shortcut commands are set to a few of the most common shortcuts in Photoshop. If you work with other programs, the commands will need to be changed for the program that is in use.
