How I Started Using Sketch App In Windows

This is my first story and it won’t be a long one. Actually it’s more of a heads up/tutorial to people who want to use Sketch but are bound to their Windows operating systems.

Important Edit

Before you read on I want to make sure everyone is getting the most out of this article. This story is about getting Sketch on Windows, and this part won’t change that. But as Sketch has been on the market for quite some time now, there are some new applications that enable you to at least view the Sketch files on your Windows pc. If you want to know how to get Sketch on your Windows pc, read on. If you want to know more about these applications, scroll down to the section “Viewing Sketch files in Windows”.

About Sketch

As a Windows 10 user I am one of the many designers who cry when someone comes up with the term “Sketch”. If you don’t, then you have no idea what Sketch is. Sketch is an amazing app for Mac that allows you to easily create stunning designs, mostly for UI and UX designers. As Bohemian Coding (creators of Sketch) states:

Sketch gives you the power, flexibility and speed you always wanted in a lightweight and easy-to-use package. Finally you can focus on what you do best: Design.

Adobe’s closest program to that “genre” was Fireworks which isn’t supported anymore. What I’m trying to say is that Photoshop is not a bad program, but when working with bigger files, it lacks speed and control. Things that Sketch does have and maybe Project Comet: Adobe’s new competitor, but that’s not for this article. On that note, let’s move on!

Sketch And Windows?

But if you say that Sketch is a Mac only app, how can you run it on Windows? Is there a hack or something?

Unfortunately not. I would like to see a windows version or some kind in the future but there will not likely be one. Sketch is super lightweight because it uses a lot of OS X’s core features, that can be seen in its interface. That means the entire app would have to be rewritten for it to work on Windows or any other operating system.

How To Install OS X and Sketch

But how do you get it to work? Let’s get on with it!

Okay, the solution is fairly simple: get Mac on your Windows machine. Either get yourself a Hackintosh or do it my way and use a virtual machine (VMPlayer) to run OS X. I know it’s not the best solution, but it works really well. I’m on an Asus laptop with 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD (a VM works faster on an SSD, obviously), and I can say it works like a charm. Also my laptop uses an Intel i7 and a Nvidia graphics card (GTX 650m). Intel tends to work better with an Apple operating system.

I do need to say that this method is not my idea. I read it on a forum and decided to find out more about OS X on a VM. Besides, I’m not really sure if the entire process is legal, so be aware of that. I saw this video (new link) on YouTube and it worked for me, so I thought : “Why not share it on Medium?”. Edit: I know the links don’t work anymore, they keep getting removed from YouTube. Therefore I encourage you to carefully research and find other sources, the method stays the same of course.

I know it’s kind of an anti-climax but actually the only thing you have to do is watch the video and do what the instructor does, then you’re good to go. I can go through every step like he does, but then I’m just copying someone who has done a very well job of explaining the process. The only thing next to do, is to buy and install sketch (a free trial is available here).

This is a solution that has certainly worked for me, I’m now able to enjoy working with Sketch and have Windows open at the same time. You can even have a shared folder that both OS’s can access.

Thanks a lot for reading this. I hope you enjoyed it and perhaps are able to use this technique to enrich you designs by Sketch’s simplicity in Windows!

I know the original YouTube link does not work anymore and the files on my pc are over 9 gigabytes, so sending them isn’t really an option. There are many other links online that will get you OS X El Capitan 10.11 on your Windows PC. I have updated the YouTube link with another one that does almost the same. I am not, however, taking any responsibilities towards anyone installing VMware.

Viewing Sketch files in Windows

So, if you don’t want to or are not able to install Sketch via VMWare there are ways to only view Sketch files in Windows. It’s definitely not the same as editing, but it can be a useful tool to have, especially for developers. There are, as we speak, quite a few tools available. I’ll be listing 3 of them, with each one of them doing things a bit differently.

Common Questions

What’s the difference between an Editor and a Viewer?

With a Teams subscription, you can give members of your team one of two roles — Editor or Viewer:

It’s worth noting that you can change roles for any member of your team at any time.

How do Editor seats work?

Editor seats allow you to create open spots in your workspace that you can add, remove and assign Editors to at a time that suits you. Read our full article to get all the details.

Using Sketch

Will Sketch work on my computer?

The Mac app (version 71.2) requires macOS Mojave (10.14.4) or newer, as well as working Internet connection (for installation and updates).

If you are running an older version of macOS, you can download older versions of the Mac app on our Updates page. To update your version of macOS, follow the instructions on Apple’s website.

For complex documents with a large number of Pages or hundreds of Artboards, a powerful Mac with more memory will definitely improve performance. If you’re unsure about compatibility, you can download a 30-day free trial to test out Sketch before you make a purchase.

Cloud supports the most recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, as well as IE11. You will need a good internet connection for viewing documents, playing prototypes and using Cloud Inspector.

Do I need to save all my documents to Cloud?

No. You will always be able to choose where to save your documents — to a Cloud workspace or locally on your Mac.

Can I install the Mac app on multiple computers?

For personal licenses, you can use the Mac app on one device only. To use it on multiple devices, you’ll need to add more devices to your license.

If you are an organization with multiple people using Sketch, you can either sign up for a Teams subscription or purchase a legacy volume license.

If you have a new device and want to use an existing license with it, you’ll need to unlink the Mac app from your old device first. To do this, open the Mac app’s preferences on your old device, and choose Unlink Device under the Account tab.

For Teams subscriptions, each Editor you pay for can register and use the Mac app with their Sketch account details.

Editors can register and use the Mac app on more than one device with the same Sketch account details (for example, on both a personal and work Mac). This is subject to a fair use policy which looks at how many different Macs use the same Sketch account details at the same time.

What payment methods do you accept?

For personal and volume licenses, our payment partner FastSpring handles both new licenses and renewals. Through them, we accept Credit/Debit card, Wire/Bank transfer, PayPal, and Sofort.

For Teams subscriptions, we only currently accept Credit/Debit card payment (handled by Stripe). Other payment methods (such as invoice and bank transfer) are on our roadmap and coming soon.

How can I get a quote or purchase order?

For personal and volume licenses, you can create a purchase order via our payment page. Simply follow the instructions to place your order and select the ‘Purchase Order’ payment option during checkout. You won’t be charged.

After that, you will receive a payment link and invoice to submit your payment and complete your purchase. Once we have received your payment in full, you will receive a receipt and license details via email.

Please note: We cannot accept a Purchase Order document as pre-payment.

For Teams subscriptions, we cannot accept payments with Purchase Orders at this time, but it is on our roadmap and will be available soon!

I need an invoice, where can I request it?

For personal and volume licenses, you will receive an invoice via email with your purchase. If you need a new copy, you can download one using the License Manager.

For Teams subscriptions, you will receive an invoice via email any time you make a payment. To view and download copies of any invoice related to your subscription, head to your team’s settings page on Cloud and click on the Billing tab. You’ll find a full history of invoices under the Billing History section.

How to Open Sketch File on Windows

Sketch App

Sketch is a Mac App. But you don’t have a Mac. You only have Windows, and this damned Sketch file someone sent you. And that someone had a Mac. But you don’t have a Mac.

What are you going to do? Buy a Mac? Too expensive. Ask that someone use Photoshop? No way, that someone is obsessed with Sketch. You’re in a hopeless jam. Or so you thought…

Sketch for Windows

You need a Sketch alternative for Windows. There is no Sketch for Windows.
Luckily, we are here to save the day and offer a few Sketch alternatives for Windows:

Sketch for PC

There will be only one. Below is the native app for Windows called Icons8 Lunacy.

Icons8 Lunacy

Lunacy is a standalone viewer for Sketch files on Windows. It was developed from scratch by hacking the sketch file format.
Price: Free

Hint: let’s open, edit, and save Sketch files on Windows.

Sketch Online

There are quite a few of these.

Avocode is all about HTML coders. Someone will have to upload sketch file to the cloud using their plugin for Sketch. The initial setup took us 40 minutes and caused Sketch to consume 90% of CPU.

Zeplin is a direct competitor to Avocode. It has downloadable apps for Mac and Windows, but don’t get fooled. They are not native apps. They just wrap their website.

This is a new tool. Unlike Avocode and Zeplin it’s a fully functional online vector editor and a collaboration tool. So far it’s free.
Update: now they have pricing.

Hint: someone will have to upload a sketch file to the cloud. So, make enough Mac-user friends so that you have at least one in every time zone. Don’t live in Manila: you need fast internet.

Social Engineering

Hint: target hipsters. They are feeble and weak.

Hint: lower your standards. Target ugly rich people.

Hint: if you sit long enough at Starbucks, someone will definitely ask you to watch over his Mac. Target old people, they pee longer.

A lot of Patience

Hint: ask Bohemian to support Sketch for Windows.

Online dating

Hint: ignore faces in the photos. Look for Macs.

Hint: live in a country that ignores copyright law. North Korea works fine.

Hint: before stealing from your employer, make sure you live in a welfare state. Norway works.

Hint: if you are short of cash for the latest Mac Pro, sell some of your diamonds, bricks of gold, or Picasso masterpieces.

Jokes aside, we’ve hacked the Sketch format and developed a viewer. It opens any Sketch file on Windows. It is a Sketch alternative for Windows. It’s free.
