How to fix mapped network drive problems on Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Just when you thought the mess with the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) was over, bugs are still a headache for many users.

This time, a number of users have reported that after upgrading to version 1809, mapped network drives appear broken with a red «X» as if they were disconnected. Trying to map drives using the net use command show up as «Unavailable,» and notifications pop with the «Could not reconnect all network drives» message.

Although trying to access the drives will still work, the problem is causing a lot of confusion among users, especially in environments managed by network administrators.

The drive mapping issue isn’t new, it was discovered shortly after the feature update was originally released, but even after pulling it offline due to data loss and other issues, the bug is still part of Windows 10.

While Microsoft is aware of the problem, a permanent fix isn’t expected until sometime in 2019. However, in the meantime, the company is offering a workaround to mitigate the bug.

In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps prevent mapped network drives problems after upgrading to the October 2018 Update.

How to fix mapped network drives problem on Windows 10

You can resolve the mapped network drives problem by creating and running two scripts either using the StartUp folder or running a task when the user signs into their account. If you’re in an Active Directory domain, Microsoft also suggests reconfiguring the Group Policy settings.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to deal with this issue, you can also defer this feature update until a permanent fix becomes available.

Creating the scripts

Use the instructions outlined below to create the required scripts.

Method 1: Run scripts using StartUp folder

After creating the Command Prompt and PowerShell command, you can use the following steps keep the mapped network drives connected:

Important: The following steps will only work if the device is connected to the network at login.

Browse to the following location:

In the «StartUp» folder, copy the MapDrives.cmd file.

Quick Tip: If you don’t have the Scripts folder, open the C drive with File Explorer, and use the Ctrl + Shift + N keyboard shortcut to create a new folder, and name it «Scripts».

In the «Scripts» folder, copy the MapDrives.ps1 file.

Once you’ve completed the steps, sign out and sign back into the account, and now the mapped drives should appear in File Explorer without problems.

In addition, the scripts will create a StartupLog.text file in the %TEMP% folder with log information about the process.

Method 2: Run scripts using Task Scheduler

Alternatively, you can use the Task Scheduler to create a task to reconnect the mapped network drive during login with these steps:

In the «Scripts» folder, copy the MapDrives.ps1 file.

Select a local user or group. For example, Users.

Select the Run with highest privileges option.

Use the «Begin the task» drop-down menu, and select the At log on option.

In the «Program/script box,» type the following:

In the Start in (optional) box, type the location of the script file:

Click the OK button.

Select the Any connection option.

After completing the steps, sign out and sign back into the account, and now the mapped drives should appear in File Explorer without problems.

Method 3: Update Group Policy settings

If you’re a network administrator running an Active Directory domain, and you’re using Group Policy to push settings to devices, Microsoft recommends editing the Group Policy Object (GPO) to map the drive and update its action to Replace.

Using the «Replace» option will delete the mapped drives, and it’ll recreate them again when the user signs back in to the account.

Once you’ve completed the steps, make sure to restart the device, and a sign in again to verify that the mapped drives no longer appear disconnected in File Explorer.

Method 4: Defer the October 2018 Update

Alternatively, if you’ve not installed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, you can avoid this and other problems configuring the device to defer this feature update until there’s a permanent solution.

Mapping a drive makes it easy to access information physically located on a different computer. A mapped drive is a simple shortcut to a remote hard drive. Assigning a local drive letter to the remote hard drive allows it to function with the same consistency as your local drives. It’s perfect for storing data you may not have space for on your PC, accessing files from your tablet, backing up content, or sharing access with multiple users.

Here’s how to map a network drive.

1. Click the Start Menu icon in the taskbar.

2. In the Start menu, click the Settings icon.

3. Click on “Network & Internet” in Windows Settings.

4. Under Change your network settings, choose Sharing options.

5. Select “Turn on network discovery”.

6. Click “Save changes.” If Network Discovery is already on the save changes button will be grayed out. Therefore you can ignore this step.

7. Click the Start Menu icon from your taskbar.

8. Click the File Explorer icon from the Start menu.

9. Select “This PC” from the left sidebar.

10. In the sub-header, click the Map Network Drive icon.

11. In the Map Network Drive, Specify the drive letter for the connection.

12. Click the Browse button to select the folder you want to connect to.

A mapped drive is a shortcut to the specific drive on a different device that enables you to access resources shared on a local network, or files on a FTP server or website.

It looks just like the shortcut on your local hard drive with its own letter, even opening as though it were on the drive, but the files are physically stored on a different computer or device altogether.

Mapping is different from mounting a drive as it allows you to open remote files as though they were stored on your own computer, while mounting allows you to open a file as if it were a folder.

The main limitation with using a mapped network drive is that it depends on a working network, so if it’s down, or the connection isn’t working properly, you can’t access the files in the mapped drive.

How To Map a Network Drive On Windows 10

We’ll show you two ways of mapping a network drive in Windows 10: Using File Explorer and using Command Prompt.

Using File Explorer to Map Network Drive Windows 10

Note: If this is your first network drive, you’ll see one on the drive list. If you have several network drives, you’ll see several of them when you click the Browse button.

Note: If your NAS device has a username and password, you may need to enter it to access the drive.

Note: If you’re unable to map a network folder or drive, check whether the computer you’re trying to connect to is turned off, or check whether you have the correct permissions. You can also check with your network administrator.

You’ll see the network drive listed on the sidebar in File Explorer under This PC. From here, you can open it and drag files such as documents, media or others to it. You can also copy/cut and paste as you would with other files and folders.

Сначала, мы рассмотрим подключение сетевого диска через графический интерфейс.

Для подключения сетевого диска в графическом интерфейсе Windows 10 ( Windows 7 рассмотрен ниже):

Напечатайте Этот компьютер и нажмите на найденный пункт (левой кнопкой мыши)

В окне Этот компьютер, в верхнем меню, выберите пункт Компьютер, далее пункт Подключить сетевой диск

Для подключения сетевого диска в графическом интерфейсе Windows 7:

Нажмите кнопку Пуск

В открывшемся меню пуск, выберите пункт Компьютер

В открывшемся окне Компьютер, в верхнем меню выберите Сервис, подключить сетевой диск:

В Windows 7 и Windows 10

В открывшемся окне подключения сетевого диска:

Выберите букву диска и путь до сетевой папки.

В примере, ниже, используется имя локального хоста( localhost ) т.е. текущего компьютера и тестовая папка:

localhost – локальный хост (текущий компьютер)

Test – имя папки

Нажмите кнопку готово и проверьте, в окне Компьютер появился сетевой диск M :

Справка по подключению дисков отображается командой:

net use /?

В окне командной строки наберите:

net use Укажите букву диска: \\Имя компьютера\папка к которой предоставлен общий доступ

net use m: \\localhost\c$\test

Для эксперимента, вы можете создать папку TEST на вашем диске C :\

Команда будет выглядеть так:

net use m: \\TEST-SHARE\Soft

Отмечу, что на удаленном компьютере у Вас должны быть права для подключения данной папки.

Также присутствует возможность подключать сетевой диск не по имени удаленного компьютера, а по IP адресу.

Строка подключения сетевого диска может выглядеть следующим образом:

net use m : \\192.168.1.2\Soft

Я не рекомендую подключать сетевые диски по ip адресам, поскольку адрес может измениться, если у вас классическое подключение и компьютер получает адрес автоматически от DHCP сервера.

Пример, указанный выше справедлив тогда, когда имя пользователя на компьютере откуда вы подключаетесь, совпадает с именем пользователя (с необходимыми правами) на компьютере куда вы подключаетесь, для того, чтобы подключить сетевой диск. Или папка к которой предоставлен общий доступ, доступна абсолютно всем пользователям.

Или ваш компьютер находится в доменной сети.

А как быть если вы не хотите предоставлять общий доступ для всех пользователей или у Вас в операционной системе отключен анонимный доступ к ресурсам?

Ответ достаточно прост. Необходимо указать имя пользователя и пароль именно того компьютера, к которому вы подключаетесь.

Рассмотрим пример такой команды. Я предполагаю, что у Вас уже открыта командная строка.

В примере мы будем подключать диск с буквой M : (ну или любая свободная буква диска на вашем компьютере).

К папке, которой вы уже предоставили общий доступ (Имя папки Soft или любая другая папка у Вас)

Ключ /USER:Имя компьютера к которому подключаетесь(или имя домена)\Имя пользователя на этом компьютере

Для примера, имя пользователя будет UserShare с паролем password (вы можете использовать для теста либо учетную запись администратора компьютера, либо создать специально для этого учетную запись и предоставить данной записи соответствующие права на папку к которой предоставлен общий доступ)

net use m: \\TEST-SHARE\SOFT /user:TESTSHARE\UserShare password

Для отключения диска используется команда

Net use Имя подключенного диска: / delete

Для отключения подключенного ранее диска M : достаточно напечатать в консоли командной строки:

net use m : / delete

Ранее подключенный диск M : будет удален.

Let’s look at an example of connecting a network drive if you shared on a TEST-SHARE computer

to the Soft folder.

The command will look like this:

net use m: \ \TEST-SHARE\Soft

Note that on the remote computer you must have permissions to connect this folder.

It is also possible to connect a network drive not by the name of the remote computer, but by IP address.

For example, if a computer named TEST-SHARE is connected to a network with an IP address of 192.168.1.2

The network drive connection string may look like this:

net use m: \\192.168.1.2\Soft

I do not recommend connecting network drives to ip addresses, because the address may change if you have a classic connection and the computer receives the address automatically from the DHCP server.

The example above is true when the user name on the computer from which you are connecting is the same as the user name (with the necessary rights) on the computer where you are connecting in order to connect the network drive. Or, the shared folder is available to all users.

Or your computer is on a domain network.

And what if you do not want to share with all users or you have anonymous access to resources disabled in the operating system?

The answer is quite simple. You must specify the user name and password of the computer to which you are connecting.

Consider an example of this command. I assume you already have the command line open.

In the example, we will connect the drive with the letter M: (or what letter you have available on the computer).

To a computer named TEST-SHARE (Specify the name of the computer you are connecting to or its IP address).

The folder you have already shared (the name of the Soft folder or any other folder You have)

/USER: the name of the computer you are connecting to (or the domain name)\the user Name on this computer

For example, the user name will be UserShare with the password password (you can use either the computer administrator account for the test, or create an account specifically for this purpose and grant this account the appropriate rights to the folder to which you have shared access)

net use m: \ \ TEST-SHARE\SOFT /user: TESTSHARE\UserShare password

To disconnect the disk, use the command

Net use the name of the mapped drive: /delete

To disconnect a previously connected m: drive, just type in the command line console

net use m: /delete

The previously attached m: drive will be deleted.
